Arizona Christian University is pleased to announce  that Dr. Hoffmann Urquiza Pereira has been hired as chair of the ACU Music Department. Dr. Pereira comes to ACU from Simpson University where he served as Director of Choral Activities and Music Department Chair.

ACU Provost Dr. Gary Damore welcomed the arrival of Dr. Pereira, saying, “Dr. Pereira is a wonderful addition to the faculty at ACU.  His credentials and his experience in Christian higher education make him ideally suited to take the music department to the next level.  We are grateful that he has accepted God’s call to serve the ACU community.”

Dr. Pereira has an extensive and varied background in music and has served as music director at several churches in his native Brazil, notably Igreja Presbiteriana de João Pessoa and Igreja Batista do Pinheiro.  In the United States, he participated in the music program at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was the Music Director at Saint John’s United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In addition to his time as Music Department Chair at Simpson University, Dr. Pereira’s higher education experience includes serving as Director of Choral Activities and Music Department Chair at Hiwassee College in Tennessee, where he also directed the Hiwassee Chorale, Shalom Chamber Choir and taught music classes.

While at Simpson, Dr. Pereira directed the Simpson University Chorale and the Trinity Repertory Singers, a community chorus specializing in choral masterworks.  Under Dr. Pereira’s direction, the Simpson University choirs collaborated with the North State and Shasta Symphony orchestras in performances of Mahler’s Symphony no.2, Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, and Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem, among others.  Other conducting credits include Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Credo Mass, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, Lauridsen’s Sure on This Shining Night, John Rutter’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem.

Dr. Pereira holds a bachelor’s degree in Música Sacra from Seminário Teológico Batista do Norte do Brasil, Licenciatura em Música from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, a Master’s Degree of Music in Choral Conducting and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral and Orchestral Conducting from Louisiana State University. He has also attended The Complete Choral Musician workshop at the Julliard School, the California Conducting Institute in Bakersfield, California, the Music Technology Institute at Illinois State University, the Choral Pedagogy Workshop at the University of Florida and a number of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) state, regional, and national conventions.  He has extensive experience as clinician and adjudicator in Brazil, California, Oregon, Washington State, Tennessee, and Louisiana.  Highlights include being clinician for the Northern California ACDA Choral Festival and adjudicator for the Northern California Young Artist’s Competition.

“It is obvious to me that the ACU administration has a clear commitment to strengthen our music department,” said Dr. Pereira. “It is also clear to me that the music department faculty and students too are looking forward to making our department even stronger than it already is.  I came to join the ACU community in this vision of excellence for the music department, so I am excited about what God will make us accomplish together as we trust Him,” he added.

Dr. Pereira has been happily married to his beloved wife Thelma for 14 years.
