Women’s Soccer: ACU Earns First-Ever GSAC Win

Arizona Christian University (4-8-1, 1-6-0 GSAC) took its first ever win in Golden State Athletics Conference women’s soccer with a goal by freshman midfielder Jesslyn Jana (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado HS) 10 minutes into the second half, and sophomore forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) scoring the match-winning Golden Goal at 106:50 of the second 10-minute overtime period. ACU ended the match 2-1, over San Diego Christian College (5-8-0, 2-5-0 GSAC), Thursday, Oct. 18, in El Cajon, California. ACU played its second double overtime match of the season. ACU takes on The Master’s College (9-4-2, 4-3-0 GSAC), which ranks 21st in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ poll, Saturday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m., on Pete Reese Field in Santa Clarita, California. ACU’s dry spell finally ended at the 55:14 mark of the second half when Jana earned her first collegiate goal, deflecting home a pass into the penalty box area by Ruland, who gained her fifth career assist and second of the season. Ruland and Jana hooked up again for the match-winner, with Ruland scoring her team-best eighth goal of the season and 18th career goal in 25 matches over two seasons. Jana’s pass from the left side split defenders and Ruland converted the pass to a goal from the right side. Jana and Ruland are tied for ACU’s career assists lead with five each, and Jana also owns the school single-season assist record. San Diego Christian led 1-0 early when junior defender Rocio Corona tallied her first goal of the season just 9:09 into the first half off a pass from freshman forward Brice Poort, who picked... read more
One More Crazy Story

One More Crazy Story

So far I’ve been on this earth for 20 short, quirky years. I say quirky because I am thoroughly convinced God does not write normal stories, only beautiful ones. Most of my life has been the drawn out story of falling in love with Jesus, but one of the sub-plots has been falling in love with nations. In the past few years, I’ve gotten to travel the world through ACU’s developing missions program. I’ve gained a bunch of wonderful stories, such as being chased through Indian jungles by monkeys, or attempting to break up fist fights in my bible class in Africa. I’ve been to the Taj Mahal, and struggled through whether or not Jesus would want me to give my shoes to a little boy who is begging me for them. I had no other shoes, for the record…but Jesus still said give to those who ask of you. I still wonder if I should have been more generous! All of these stories have been a wonderful blessing to live, feeling like the chapters in a book written by an incredible skilled and gracious author. What’s funny is that these are the stories that people ask me to tell again and again. They remember how I got into a motorcycle accident because we tried to fit too many people on a motorbike, or the story of playing Cricket in India. The thing is, these aren’t the stories I want to tell over and over. These are not the stories that changed me. The stories that changed me are the ones that most people don’t think are worth hearing again. The stories that are made up of memories of faces more than of words and plot points. I don’t... read more

Constitution Day 2012

Constitution Day 2012

On Monday, September 17, 2012, we celebrate the 225th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. The turmoil in much of the world last week, along with remembrances of the 2001 terrorist attacks and murders on American soil September 11, are in many ways vivid reminders that we live in an exceptional nation. The freedoms we have in America are unusual in our world, and the ideas our nation is based on are worthy of defending – not only militarily but also with our words and actions. Compared to the rest of the world today, and really, compared to the experience of most humans for thousands of years, most of us in America have lived our entire lives with levels of peace and prosperity unprecedented in human history. That is not an accident, but is largely a result of the choices made by America’s Founders more than two centuries ago. When we say America is an exceptional nation, we should be clear on what it means, and what it doesn’t mean: It does not mean America is perfect or above criticism. It certainly does not mean that the people of America are somehow more worthy of blessings than the people of other nations, or that we are somehow intrinsically better than other people – that would be unbiblical and wrong. What it does mean is that the ideas America was founded on – the notion that all men are created equal, that our rights come from God, not government, that the power of government should be limited and separated between various branches – are exceptional ideas. And... read more
ACU Hits Record Enrollment Again – Up 47 Percent Since 2010

ACU Hits Record Enrollment Again – Up 47 Percent Since 2010

Arizona Christian University is excited to announce record enrollment for Fall 2012 – an increase to 682 total students, up 47 percent in the past two years. Total enrollment in Fall 2006 was just 308 students, meaning ACU has more than doubled in size in the past six years at its northeast Phoenix campus. “We are thrilled that students are flocking to the opportunity in Arizona to attend an affordable, Christ-centered, non-profit university with a variety of degree programs to prepare students for leadership in our world,” said ACU President Len Munsil. “Our campus improvements, expanded academic and athletic programs, and commitment to traditional classroom instruction and mentoring of our students is drawing enormous interest locally and around the United States.” While 74 percent of ACU students are from Arizona, students come from a total of 31 states, including Alaska, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Florida, and eight foreign countries, including Thailand, Russia, Brazil and Uganda. More than 200 students are brand new this year at ACU. There are 516 students in the traditional undergraduate program – up 15 percent from 448 last fall — while 166 students are either in the degree completion program, or attend ACU through dual or concurrent enrollment. ACU’s growth the past two years has been fueled by increased visibility, including its name change and dinner events featuring former President George W. Bush and the Rev. Franklin Graham. In addition, every full-time ACU student receives an iPad. Last year ACU was re-accredited for the maximum 10 years and approved to offer new degree programs in biology, communication and political science. New sports include... read more
Number Sense

Number Sense

17+33. Go ahead, solve it. Come on, you can do it! I know few college students like math, but you’ve got this. Okay, now find another strategy. Find a new way to get your answer. Here’s some examples: Line up the numbers just like you were taught in school. Subtract 3 from the thirty three and add it tithe seventeen. Now it’s twenty plus thirty. Add ten and 33. Add the 7. Can you think of any more? Now your brain maybe hurting, and you may complain that this is too hard. It’s okay. Practice will help you out. This is called Number Sense and it’s how math is being taught in school nowadays. Don’t you just feel smarter by knowing three different ways to solve the above problem? Twice a week I get to go to my class “Math in the Elementary School” and solve problems like this one. I must admit that I like math, and this is still my favorite class. Math becomes valuable, relevant, and important to students if it is taught correctly. It is no longer just for nerds, but for every person who wants to succeed at life. When I leave class, I am excited to go out and change the lives of my students. Life change, hopefully by teaching them to enjoy math, but also by sharing with them the unconditional love of Jesus. Evaluate your day. What activity gets you fired up and excited? What do you like doing just for fun? How can you share this activity with others? It is when we are most passionate that we are most influential. Use your hobby, your talents, your gifts to love others as Christ did. I’m using... read more
