ACU Sends Forth Largest Graduating Class at 52nd Commencement Ceremony

ACU Sends Forth Largest Graduating Class at 52nd Commencement Ceremony

Arizona Christian University graduated the largest class in its history at its 52nd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 24 at Bethany Bible Church in Phoenix, as 119 students were awarded bachelor’s degrees in Behavioral Health, Family Studies, Biblical Studies, Biology, Business Administration, Christian Ministries, Communication, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Music and Music Education. More than 1,300 people were in attendance to celebrate the graduates. U.S. Congressman Trent Franks delivered the commencement address, reminding students that God can use all of us for His purposes. After listing the flaws of several giants of the faith, Franks said, “God uses inadequate people, and He always has.” Rep. Franks is in his 7th term in Washington DC, having represented the West Valley since 2000. ACU President Len Munsil delivered the “charge” to the graduates. Instead of telling the students they’re not special or otherwise criticizing them — a common theme in recent university commencement speeches — President Munsil reminded the graduates how God views them – as His children, fearfully and wonderfully made, chosen, and beloved. He challenged them to meet the great expectations we have for them to be difference makers in our community, state, nation and world, as those who rise up to restore and repair that which is broken in our communities (Isaiah 58). The graduates were also honored in an awards ceremony the Friday evening before Commencement, as hundreds of faculty, staff, students, family, and friends attended an event held in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on ACU’s campus. Outstanding graduate awards were given in each department, along with athletic, academic, Christian service and other awards. Arizona Christian University wishes... read more

Academic Concerns for Adult Students

Academic Concerns for Adult Students

Students returning to school after several years are often concerned about keeping up with academics. Taking tests and writing essays may seem like a distant, and often unpleasant, memory from long ago. Yet when the goal is as important as finishing a degree, many are working hard to brush up on the study skills from the past to keep up with classmates in the present. The Degree Completion Program (DCP) at ACU is conscious of the concern that many adult students have regarding study skills and collegiate writing assignments. The accelerated, 20-month schedules for the Behavioral Studies, Business Administration, and Christian Ministries Bachelor’s Degrees all begin with a course specifically designed for adult students to set them up for success. This course helps adults sharpen the skills they already have from previous college and workplace experience. Here are five tips for adult students to keep in mind when preparing to go back to college: 1. Let God be part of your journey. He has made it possible for you to come this far, lean on Him to carry you through to the celebration at the end. Pull together support from family and friends and ask them to pray you through each class and any times of struggle. 2. Be patient with yourself. The more time you’ve spent away from school the more difficult it may be to feel comfortable. It’s possible that it will all come rushing back, but if it doesn’t, be gracious with yourself and keep trying. You are doing something noble and worthwhile, don’t let negativity weigh you down. 3. Adjust your schedule. Carve out an hour or two every day for... read more

2014 Fall Football Schedule

ACU Athletic Director Jeff Rutter Monday announced the schedule for the inaugural season of Arizona Christian University Firestorm football — a schedule that shows ACU playing five home games and four road games that will take the NAIA school from coast to coast and into America’s heartland. “What a fantastic opportunity for members of this first squad to open at home and then get the chance to play college football literally across America during this inaugural season,” said Rutter. “In addition to five home games, this first team will play on the West Coast near Portland, in northern California near San Francisco, in Florida and in St. Louis, Missouri.” The Firestorm, led by Head Coach Donnie Yantis, have signed 101 players for their inaugural season, including 76 from high schools in Arizona. ACU’s first two games will be home games – the ACU opener versus Evangel University of Springfield, Missouri on Saturday night, Aug. 23, and one week later on Aug. 30 versus Wayland Baptist from Plainview, Texas. Start time for both NAIA games will be at 7:15 p.m. ACU will actually play in two inaugural games this season. In addition to hosting ACU’s first-ever game on Aug. 23, the Firestorm’s first road game at George Fox University on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1:30 p.m. will be the first football game for that NCAA D3 program since the school suspended its program in 1968, and will the first game played in brand-new Stoffer Family Stadium in Newberg, Oregon, near Portland.
