Hobby Lobby Founders Honored with ACU’s 4th Daniel Award for Courageous Public Faith

Arizona Christian University on April 9 presented Hobby Lobby Founders David and Barbara Green with the 4th Daniel Award for Courageous Public Faith in honor of their stand for the sanctity of life and religious freedom, combined with running a successful business that closes on Sundays and takes great care of its employees. The Greens received the award at a banquet in their honor at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort with nearly 400 people in attendance. During the banquet the Greens participated in a question and answer time with ACU President Len Munsil, in which they discussed their journey in growing Hobby Lobby from its modest beginning to now having more than 600 stores totaling over $3.65 billion in sales in 2014. The Greens also discussed their decision to stand up for the sanctity of life through a lawsuit challenging the HHS contraceptive/abortion mandate. The lawsuit resulted in a 5-4 decision from the U.S. Supreme Court that protects our freedom to operate businesses consistent with our religious principles. The banquet also featured messages from President Munsil regarding ACU’s future, encouragement from ACU student Josiah Friedman about the difference ACU has made in equipping him as a pro-life leader, musical selections from current ACU students, prayers from Pastor Tommy Barnett of Phoenix First Assembly and ACU Trustee and Pastor Larry Anderson of North Bible Church, and was emceed by ACU Trustee Floyd Brown. In addition to the banquet that evening, David and Barbara Green addressed the ACU student body in the university’s chapel service on campus Thursday morning. Hobby Lobby founders David and Barbara Green to receive 4th Daniel Award for Courageous Public Faith at a Dinner in their Honor

Hobby Lobby founders David and Barbara Green to receive 4th Daniel Award for Courageous Public Faith at a Dinner in their Honor

Arizona Christian University President Len Munsil announced Thursday that Hobby Lobby Founders David and Barbara Green will receive the 4th Daniel Award for Courageous Public Faith at a banquet in their honor April 9 in Scottsdale. “We are thrilled to be able to honor the Greens for the stands they have taken for Christ as business owners,” Munsil said. “Not only have they been huge job creators who are renowned for taking care of their employees, but they have been willing to stand up to unjust governmental decrees that violate their conscience, religious freedom and commitment to the sanctity of every human life.” The Greens’ willingness to stand up for the sanctity of life through a lawsuit challenging the HHS contraceptive/abortion mandate resulted in a landmark 5-4 decision from the U.S. Supreme Court in 2014 that protects our freedom to operate a business consistent with our religious principles. Previous recipients of the Daniel Award include the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, evangelist and Samaritan’s Purse CEO Rev. Franklin Graham, and Grammy winning recording artist Michael W. Smith. “The purpose of the Daniel Award is to honor those who have stood for Christ in our culture, no matter what sphere of influence or vocation, and to provide an example for our students who are studying for degrees in the same field,” Munsil said. “With President Bush, Franklin Graham and Michael W. Smith, we honored those who led in politics, full-time Christian ministry, and the world of arts and entertainment and music.” “Our business administration degree is one of the most popular degrees at ACU,” Munsil said....
