2014 ACU Commencement Speaker: Congressman Trent Franks

Arizona Christian University is excited to announce that Congressman Trent Franks will speak at ACU’s 2014 Commencement Ceremony May 24 to the largest graduating class in ACU history. ACU’s 52nd Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 at Bethany Bible Church in Phoenix, 6060 N. 7th Avenue in Phoenix. The class of 116 graduates is substantially larger than the previous high of 100 graduates from the Class of 2012. Congressman Franks is in his 7th term in Washington DC, having represented the West Valley since 2000, and is a member of the Armed Services and Judiciary committees. He is a former member of the Arizona Legislature, Director of the Governor’s Office for Children, and President of Arizona Family Research Institute, predecessor to The Center for Arizona Policy. Congressman Franks has received numerous awards from taxpayers’ organizations, educational organizations, and pro-life organizations including receiving the 2012 William Wilberforce Leadership Award from Students for Life of America. ACU Welcomes Author and Bible Scholar N.T. Wright

Arizona Christian University is excited and honored to welcome author and New Testament scholar N.T. Wright to campus. Wright will speak in ACU’s chapel service on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Wright is currently the Research Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He holds a Doctor of Divinity from Oxford University and formerly served as the Anglican bishop of Durham in the Church of England. Among various awards and honorary doctorates, Wright was awarded the Mark O. Hatfield Leadership Award in 2012. He has written over 50 books, including Simply Jesus and How God Became King, as well as the five-volume Christian Origins and the Question of God series. Pete Hamstra new VP of Enrollment

Arizona Christian University President Len Munsil announced today that Pete Hamstra has joined the team at ACU as Vice President for Enrollment. “We are excited about the significant experience Pete Hamstra brings to ACU in admissions and enrollment at a Christian university,” said Munsil. “His energy, experience and leadership will help guide us through our next phase of growth at ACU.” Hamstra held roles as a Dean and Vice President in his 16 years at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois. During his tenure at Trinity, he had oversight of admissions, financial aid, development, and marketing and communications. Most recently Pete served as Dean of Admissions. Trinity is a Christian College in the Reformed tradition located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. The school enjoyed enrollment growth from 600 students when he arrived, to nearly 1400 students today. “It was exciting to see the Lord’s hand of blessing at Trinity and to be part of how He made that happen,” said Hamstra. “I am overjoyed that God is calling me now to serve Him at Arizona Christian University. I look forward to working with the great people, under excellent leadership, at this wonderful school. Donnie Yantis selected as first head coach for ACU Firestorm Football

Arizona Christian University President Len Munsil announced Thursday that veteran Valley high school coach Donnie Yantis will be the first head coach for the ACU Firestorm, who begin NAIA collegiate football in the fall of 2014. “We had dozens of outstanding candidates, many of whom had college and professional head coaching experience,” said Munsil. “But as we moved into the process, Donnie’s outstanding reputation among Arizona high school coaches, his work ethic, his high standards of personal integrity and his enthusiasm for the role of football in the Christ-centered mission of Arizona Christian University set him apart.” “I am excited, honored, blessed and humbled by the opportunity to build a great football program that glorifies God at an outstanding Christian university,” Yantis said. “I can’t wait to get started!” Arizona State Deputy Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Mike Norvell applauded ACU’s decision to hire Yantis. “Donnie Yantis was one of the first Arizona high school coaches to meet and spend time with me and Coach Graham and the ASU coaching staff,” said Norvell. “We have the utmost respect for him. ACU Welcomes Dr. Hoffmann Urquiza Pereira

Arizona Christian University is pleased to announce  that Dr. Hoffmann Urquiza Pereira has been hired as chair of the ACU Music Department. Dr. Pereira comes to ACU from Simpson University where he served as Director of Choral Activities and Music Department Chair. ACU Provost Dr. Gary Damore welcomed the arrival of Dr. Pereira, saying, “Dr. Pereira is a wonderful addition to the faculty at ACU.  His credentials and his experience in Christian higher education make him ideally suited to take the music department to the next level.  We are grateful that he has accepted God’s call to serve the ACU community.” Dr. Pereira has an extensive and varied background in music and has served as music director at several churches in his native Brazil, notably Igreja Presbiteriana de João Pessoa and Igreja Batista do Pinheiro.  In the United States, he participated in the music program at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was the Music Director at Saint John’s United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In addition to his time as Music Department Chair at Simpson University, Dr. Pereira’s higher education experience includes serving as Director of Choral Activities and Music Department Chair at Hiwassee College in Tennessee, where he also directed the Hiwassee Chorale, Shalom Chamber Choir and taught music classes.
